Carindrina

Carindrina

Carindrina comes from a long line of respected smiths on the Fegyvyr Slopes, the Dwarven Island at the South of the world. Not many people travel farther South, as Voeten tends to be largely left alone. Carindrina always wondered about other areas and would frequently look out along the peaks of the mountains, trying to catch a glimpse of distant shores.

She had a strong desire to do more than mine and smith, which were the focus of much of life on the slopes. However, there was also the fighter training school, Bardagamour. The school was very secretive. It was situated at one of the peaks of the mountains, with about 2/3s of the fortress hanging out over the sheer cliff face, the angry water churning below. There was a single safe path up the slope, and even the "safe" path was quite treacherous if you didn't have some of the natural dwarven abilities for navigating tough and shifting terrain. They only selected the best of the best, and they only fought in battles they found worthy.

Her family has stayed neutral on all conflicts, choosing to focus on their craft and shunning violence. Her desire to join the Bardagamour was met with hostility and resistance, so she decided to go in secret. The fighters at first sent her home, refusing to train someone without their family's consent. Carindrina scaled the cliffs to sneak through a small area of weak defenses and practiced in the shadows, silently following along with the drill sergeants' orders. Her personal training and dedication did not go unnoticed, and eventually the group allowed her to train in full with the newest members of the Bardagamour. She rose through the ranks quickly, her speed and skill with the battle hammers sending her to the top of the class.

No secret is safe for long when life is limited to a small island, and soon her family found out why she had been so tired and where the cuts and bruises that had bloomed on her arms were coming from. She tried to reconcile with her family, but they insisted she stop fighting.

She took the first opportunity to leave the island with her unit and prove herself in a battle outside the sparring ring. When the commander who had hired the fighters gave her group an order she would not follow, she was told to follow the order or leave in disgrace. She left quickly, and returned to the slopes.

She tried appealing to the leaders of the Bardagamour, but they held firm, saying that "an order given is an order followed". That sort of discipline turned to blind following did not sit well with her, so she stalked down the slopes to her family's home. As the silver bell tinkled when she opened the door to the shop at the front of their house, her mother looked up in surprise. Carindrina expected a sympathetic ear and advice, but was met with cold indifference from both of her parents. They offered her a single night's refuge. She seethed in her old room. The injustices she had seen could not go unanswered. Deciding she would never follow orders from others again, she snuck to the shop and prepared to leave the island. As she was leaving, a silver glint caught her eye--her family's ring. She slipped it on and dissolved into the night shadows as she had been trained to do. Paying a man for use of his small boat, she let the sea take her northwards to adventure, justice, and hopefully peace.
