Tricreche

Tricreche is the Southern end of Bregne Fenn. This is where our story begins, with our adventurers arriving in Balvonier, the capital. Tricreche is ruled by a council of nobles, but does not have a king.

Tricreche is interesting in that it is completely surrounded by dense magical forests, and in the center there is the heart of the forest, Dumbraava, which is a forbidden and terrifying place from which no one ever returns. The towns circle around Dumbraava on The Roueda, or round path. Other large towns of note include Spindledown, Thornyside, and Weatherby.

Furus and Galia currently live in Balvonier, the capital, however Furus is not originally from the South.

Oath Sworn On The Heart Of The Forest

Image-empty-state.png

He asks them to swear on the Dumbraava, the heart of the forest, that they will not tell anyone what he says. Galia whispers to the group that local legend is taht if you break an oath on the heart of the forest, the fey will kill you in a horrible manner. Galia then swears, and Adalia follows her lead. Belladonna begins to walk out. Carindrina asks him to swear on the heart of the forest that the promise they make won't harm the people in this village. James agrees. Carindrina, Furus, Venus, and Midna all agree to swear. Galia goes to Belladonna, and begs her to help. Furus tries to help, telling her that if the fey come to kill her, it is her chance to stab their eyes out. Adalia shakes her head and says, if we don't break the oath, there isn't a problem. And the unlikliest of friends, Galia is the one who finally gets through to her, telling her that she can tell that Belladonna is an honest and noble person who would never break and oath she takes, if she doesn't feel comfortable ytaking the oath, the group will try to guide her towards decisions that will help the community. Galia explains that she made a promise not to force people to do things, so she is asking as someone who cares very much for the people of this town, if she would please help them. Belladonna agrees to come back and makes the oath.

James thanks them for taking the oath, and explains that his father had wanted him to marry the daughter of another noble family, The Tanglewoods. Her family follows Liguaquide and his family follows Shinze, which is how his family has operated for centuries, and now he knows thanks to information from Carindrina, that it is actually important for his family to be set up with that worship. However he doesn't love her, he loves someone else. He is worried that now that he knows this, he should end his relationship so that he doesn't inflict the curse on the town. His father hadn't made a decision when he died, they were going to talk about it in the morning, but in the morning he was dead.

Carindrina says she understands the need for secrecy. Adalia asks how involved Blitherby was involved. James explains that Blitherby is instrumental in organizing meetings between the families, as Tricreche is run as a council of the families and not a king, but Balvonier is the capital so Blitherby does organize many of the meetings. Adalia tells him they found a letter from Blitherby to Elaine Tanglewoos sayings "This was not in our agreement. Where did you put it?". James says he doesn't know why she would need aletter from Blitherby since her parents run the town, unless she was beginning to take over. They didn't have any agreements other than their engagement, which while it has been in motion for several years, wasn't officially announced. He asks when Blitherby mailed the letter. Adalia tells him that they knew the sword was missing. but initially he didn't tell Blitherby, he only told him just before he met the group. He has only seen Elaine a few times, but he didn't feel anything for her.

Furus asks him to clarify why it weighs so heavily on him. James said it wasn't weighing so heavily on him until his father died, and now he feels that he needs to follow through with his Father's final wishes, and now that he knows the religions and the promises are so important and tied to the curse. They also need to keep agreements with the other towns on the Roueda or the roads can be dangerous and peopel can go missing. Carindrina asks if he has made a promise to the Tanglewoods or the girl he loves. He says he has to the girl he loves. Cardrina says she understands that, but thinks he needs to honor his promise. He is unsure because if his father made the deal for him, he needs to honor it, and he knows that if he asked his love she would let him go for the safety of the town. Carindrina says she thinks honor comes from within. He asks if they will go talk to the Tanglewoods and ask them to release him from the engagement.

Nereid's Shawl

Rope of Entanglement

Image-empty-state.png

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/wondrous-items/r-z/rope-of-entanglement
Aura strong transmutation; CL 12th; Slot —; Price 21,000 gp; Weight 5 lbs.

DESCRIPTION

A rope of entanglement looks just like any other hempen rope about 30 feet long. Upon command, the rope lashes forward 20 feet or upward 10 feet to entangle a victim. An entangled creature can break free with a DC 20 Strength check or a DC 20 Escape Artist check.

A rope of entanglement has AC 22, 12 hit points, hardness 10, and damage reduction 5/slashing. The rope repairs damage to itself at a rate of 1 point per 5 minutes, but if a rope of entanglement is severed (all 12 hit points lost to damage), it is destroyed.

Martyr's Tear

Image-empty-state.png

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/wondrous-items/m-p/martyr-s-tear
Aura moderate necromancy; CL 6th; Weight —; Slot none; Price 6,000 gp

DESCRIPTION

This imperfect, rose-tinted gemstone resembles a teardrop or a broken heart depending on its orientation. Its pale facets are typically marred by a single crack or chip near the gem’s middle.

Once per day, the bearer may spend a standard action to transfer 3d6 hit points from himself into the gem. This deepens the gem’s color, with a stronger color indicating more life energy stored in it. The gem can store a maximum of 18 hit points. If any hit points are stored in the gem, the bearer may touch it himself or another creature as a standard action, transferring all the stored life energy from the gem to the target creature, healing it a number of hit points equal to the amount stored in the gem. This returns the gem to its normal color.

Candle of Truth

Image-empty-state.png

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/wondrous-items/c-d/candle-of-truth
Aura faint enchantment; CL 3rd; Slot —; Price 2,500 gp; Weight 1/2 lb.

DESCRIPTION

This white tallow candle, when burned, calls into place a zone of truth spell (Will DC 13 negates) in a 5-foot radius centered on the candle. The zone lasts for 1 hour, while the candle burns. If the candle is snuffed before that time, the effect is canceled and the candle ruined.

Origami Swarm

Image-empty-state.png

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/wondrous-items/m-p/origami-swarm
Aura faint transmutation; CL 3rd; Weight —; Slot none; Price 300 gp

DESCRIPTION

This stiff folded paper vaguely resembles a hand-sized pest such as a beetle, spider, or cockroach. Completing two key folds in the paper causes it to multiply into hundreds of similar-sized duplicates of itself.

These duplicates fill a 10-foot space and act as a rat swarm, except they have fire vulnerability, the construct type, and do not have the disease special ability. The paper beetles do not attack their creator, but are otherwise uncontrolled and attack anything nearby. After 5 rounds, the beetles crumple and fall inert. Once activated, an origami swarm loses all magic.

Acrobat Slippers

Image-empty-state.png

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/wondrous-items/r-z/slippers-acrobat

The glasses are also good at detecting falsified documents, granting their wearer a +5 bonus to Linguistics checks to identify forgeries and the ability make such checks untrained.

Bandages of Rapid Recovery

Image-empty-state.png

Aura faint conjuration; CL 1st; Slot chest; Price 200 gp; Weight 1 lb.

DESCRIPTION

These linen bandages have the same color and softness as the feathers of a dove, but their antiseptic smell suggests a less natural origin. Any creature wrapped in these bandages recovers from wounds and ability damage each day as if receiving complete bed rest regardless of activity. A creature actually receiving long-term care (from the Heal skill) or complete bed rest while wearing the bandages gains a +4 bonus to its effective level or Hit Dice when determining how many hit points it recovers each day. The bandages are destroyed once removed or when the wearer recovers all hit points and ability damage, whichever comes first.

Collar of the True Companion

Image-empty-state.png

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/wondrous-items/c-d/collar-of-the-true-companion

Aura moderate transmutation; CL 9th; Slot neck; Price 10,000 gp; Weight 1 lb.

DESCRIPTION

Although it appears to be a simple thong of leather, this collar was initially conceived by druids who believed that there were animals who possessed spirits worthy of elevation to true sentience. If worn by a creature of the animal type with an Intelligence less than 3, a collar of the true companion grants a +2 enhancement bonus to Intelligence. This does not give the animal the ability to speak, but it does allow it to understand one spoken language (chosen by the item’s creator).

If the collar is worn for at least 1 week by a creature of the animal type, the creature is raised to humanlike sentience, as though by the awaken spell. Once this occurs, the collar loses its magical properties.

If a collar of the true companion is worn for more than 1 week by a creature not of the animal type, the wearer is feebleminded until the collar is removed.

Folding Boat

Image-empty-state.png

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/wondrous-items/a-b/boat-folding

Aura moderate transmutation; CL 6th; Slot —; Price 7,200 gp; Weight 4 lbs.

DESCRIPTION

A folding boat looks like a small wooden box about 12 inches long, 6 inches wide, and 6 inches deep when it is inactive. In this mode, it can be used to store items just like any other box. Yet when the proper command word is given, the box unfolds itself rapidly in the space of a single round to form a boat 10 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 2 feet in depth. A second command word causes it to unfold even further into a ship 24 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 6 feet deep. The folding boat cannot unfold if there isn’t enough open space for it to occupy once unfolded. Any objects formerly stored in the box now rest inside the boat or ship.

In its smaller form, the boat has one pair of oars, an anchor, a mast, and a lateen sail. In its larger form, the boat has a deck, single rowing seats, five sets of oars, a rudder, an anchor, a deck cabin, and a mast with a square sail. The boat can hold 4 people comfortably, while the ship carries 15 with ease.

A third word of command causes the boat or ship to fold itself into a box once again, but only when it is unoccupied.

Boundary Chalk

Image-empty-state.png

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/wondrous-items/a-b/boundary-chalk

Aura moderate evocation; CL 10th; Weight —; Slot none; Price 10,000 gp

DESCRIPTION

The surface of this stick of white chalk is covered with silvery runes.

Drawing a line with the chalk creates a wall of force that is as long as the line and extends 10 feet perpendicular to the surface on which the line was drawn. Drawing a 5-foot line is a standard action that provokes acts of opportunity. Each wall lasts 10 minutes; the bearer of the chalk can dismiss a section of wall as a swift action by touching the stick of chalk to it. One stick of boundary chalk can draw 100 feet of line before it is used up, and it must be used in 5-foot increments.

Traveler's Anytool

Image-empty-state.png

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/wondrous-items/r-z/traveler-s-any-tool
Aura moderate transmutation; CL 9th; Weight 2 lbs.; Slot none; Price 250 gp

DESCRIPTION

This implement at first seems to be nothing but a 12-inch iron bar lined with small plates and spikes. It can be folded, twisted, hinged, and bent, to form almost any known tool. Hammers, shovels, even a block and tackle (without rope) are possible. It can duplicate any tool the wielder can clearly visualize that contains only limited moving parts, such as a pair of scissors, but not a handloom. It cannot be used to replace missing or broken parts of machines or vehicles unless a mundane tool would have done the job just as well.

The any-tool counts as a set of masterwork artisan’s tools for most Craft or Profession skills (although very specialist crafts such as alchemy still require their own unique toolset). It is an ineffective weapon, always counting as an improvised weapon and never granting any masterwork bonus on attack rolls.

Brad's Slime Water

Image-empty-state.png

Furus tried to collect some of the acidic slime under the Stoneblood manor that seemed to run through all of the dungeons and temples.

Unsure of the properties of the waters, he brought the sample to Yvaine Stormhold of the Bubbling Candle Apothecary. She agreed to look at the water for him. She told him it was a very strange mix of magic and poison, that she ran many tests. It did 1d3 acid damage initially, but if left on for more than 5 minutes, it would begin doing 1d3 necrotic damage every 10 minutes. She couldn't identify the poison, but offered to send it to a friend who specialized in poisons in Corazon Valley Island. He agreed and she warned him it may take several days to get it there, let him test it, and get answers back.

Sweet Shimmer's Favor

Image-empty-state.png

Midna and Nira agreed to owe Sweet Shimmer a favor for her help in order to have a daytime guard for Adele and to bring the attacker to them.

Sweet Shimmer's Doll

Image-empty-state.png

A small doll made from leaves, twigs, and flowers that can be used to scry for Adele, who has a matching doll.

Venus's Vision

Image-empty-state.png

The vision began with a dark and twisted forest, then a glowing entryway, you fell down, deep underground the air was cold and wet. The caves dripped and clinked and shadows skittered along the walls. The wetness was overpowering and seemed to wrap around you like a shroud. It clung to your body, your face, then the waves of water enclosed around you. You were breathing in the water, drowning and choking, and nothing could shake you awake. As the water stayed on your skin, it burned and scarred you, you could see the skin melting then turning black and flaking away. The tips of your fingers were pearly bones that reached out like bleached coral to grab onto anything, anything that could save you. Voices called to you, distorted through the water, but you finally heard them clearly, telling you to return to the present, and you saw a silvery thread of time swirling loosely in the water, you reached out, struggling to grab it without flesh, then lurched out of the vision and back into the forest.

Midna's Vision

Image-empty-state.png

A beautiful river flows through the forest, and in the river are beautiful creatures with blue and green hair, green skin, and warm faces. They splash and play in the water, and everything looks idyllic. As you approach, your vision becomes blurred and distorted by mist and you hear screams. You breathe your fire to blow away the mist, and laying in the water there are only two creatures left, black as ash and dead, their bodies gently slapping on the shore as the river’s current lulls them to eternal rest. A deep sense of peace fills you, and you return to the present.

Galia's Vision

Image-empty-state.png

A city formed before you, resting atop a large hill. The image broke in two, and a black shadow wove through one side of the city, wreathing the streets in darkness, then a wave of blood poured down from the castle atop the other side of the city, drenching it in blood. Water began to well up from the crack between the two and as it touched the blood and shadow, they melted away, but left nothing but the skeletons of people and bones of the houses in its wake. The noxious fumes rose up and up to the clouds where you rested and began choking you. You couldn’t breathe and you couldn’t stop the destruction, just watch as the city crumbled. A sharp pain on your arm brought you back as Juniper drug you away from the mirror.

Adalia's Vision

Image-empty-state.png

You saw a silver ring slipped onto a finger. There was a trail of mushrooms that seemed to glow. You moved on and the pressure around you built and built as the darkness grew deeper until finally your ears popped. A glowing hand, a glowing bull, and a glowing sun appeared before you. Then a bridge over some lava. You see long chains leading into darkness. There is laughter, children’s laughter, but it sounds hollow and distant. The images were quick, small flashes, then the vision broke.

Answers From The Faerie Seer

Image-empty-state.png

Adalia: where have the missing people been going?

Seer: " The circle is round, but also broken, things end up not where they've come from, but they all end up returning."

Adalia: specifically where is the Abbot family, Eleanor, and Ava?

Seer: " There are many more missing than you know. The family you seek is closer than you think, but much much farther from life than they should be."

Adalia: Did other people disappeared at the festival of light?

Seer: yes.

Adalia: who went missing at the festival of lights?

Seer: "He was a child of music and the forest"

Adalia: Do you know his name?

Seer: I can only see in pictures, but I can show you his face.

Adalia to Galia: Is it safe to let her put a picture in her mind?

Galia: It should be fine. Seer, please show all of us the image

Seer: (nods)

Venus: Do you know who will go missing next?

Seer: I do and you will recognize her (shows a picture they recognize as Adele Greenbrush)

Seer:" We hope to stop it, but sometimes in stopping one, another takes it place."

Seer: Have you found the children, as she has seen the group find them.

Adalia: No. Did any children go missing for the same reason before Grimmur?

Seer: I can't see what takes them, and I can't see the reason, but it is something evil and dark that is blocking my vision, and it starts breaking the circle of the Roueda in Thornyside.

Adalia: (again) Have any other children mysteriously disappeared before Grimmur?

Seer: As the seasons go, one child has gone missing every festival starting at Balansera one year ago, at the festival of balance children have been going missing.

Adalia: "Just one?"

Seer: yes.

Adalia: What changed at the festival of luck?

Seer:Nothing changed, a child went missing, but they might say that two went missing as they are looking for another child. They went separately yet together.

Adalia: Was Mrs. Abbot pregnant?

Seer: I can't tell as Mrs. Abbot is too close to death. They have one more question before she must leave.

Venus: Can she sense any darkness or deceit from the Tanglewoods?

Seer: The Tanglewoods are drowning in darkness and drowning in sorrow.

The seer offers to let them look in the mirror before they go. Galia warns them that looking in the mirror can be dangerous as some people can get lost when they are looking through time and it can take you a few days to find your way back. They all look, but Galia and Venus are affected by dark visions.

Silver Bell

Image-empty-state.png

The Queen of the Wyrmwood Court gave the group a small silver bell with intricate, delicate filigree. There were explicit instructions: If they ring the bell once, the fey will know they found the children, ring is three times the fey will come to their aid, but if they ring it twice, they can’t predict the outcome. The rings are all different frequencies, and that one doesn’t always call creatures with good intentions. Belladonna currently has the bell.

Iron Keys

Image-empty-state.png

The Queen of the Wyrmwood Court gave the group a small iron key, carefully wrapped in a sheepskin. When they touched the key, they became marked and had agreed to the Faerie Bargain to find the missing children. The key was merely a device to deliver an arcane mark that allows them to activate the door at Iron Key House. Adalia, Belladonna, Venus, Carindrina, and Nira all took keys.

The Abbot's Cage

Image-empty-state.png

There is an iron cage in the attic of the Abbot's home. When Venus touched it, there was a large shockwave of good holy power that exploded out and pulsed from the cage.

Investigating the cage carefully, they determined each bar was carved with blessings from all of the old gods. This was something all of the temples had come together to contain a great evil. There was no clear way in or out, so there must have been a key, but they did not find one searching the house.

Talking with Sundrop, the house Brownie did nothing to illuminate why they had a giant cage, what they planned on trapping, or how to open it.

The History of Balvonier

Image-empty-state.png

A chapter from an old tome given to Carindrina by Lady Caltain at the Black Poppy. Within this neglected book some very interesting history was revealed.

Stoneblood Manor used to be owned by the Stonebloods, a family with vampiric roots, though they weren’t evil, and not all completely vampiric. Centuries ago, predating the oldest surviving official records of the town (that anyone else knows about), a Glasserune was pledged to be engaged to a Stoneblood. The Glasserunes were a noble family from the North who had been pushing to expand trade further south into Tricreche, which was largely considered a feral area. While they had their own nobility and government, many families had "dark" aspects to their lineage. During the engagement feast, the Glasserune forces entered, and used light channeled from their god, Domsaul (god of the sun) to burn the Stonebloods and kill their vampiric line with holy light.

One escaped, Blethela, the daughter who was pledged to be engaged. She managed to survive by becoming a complete vampire, and her mother poured all of her magic into a curse as she died so that any Glasserune who died would be turned into a vampire.

They first attempted to combat this by performing a blessing ritual with the family sword that had been anointed by Domsaul, however, he was so displeased by their show of violence and trickery, he abandoned the family. Their deceit both to the Stonebloods, and to their deity (for they had said the Stonebloods were evil) left the region cold and withering. Their dead began to turn to vampires and they were at a loss.

The Fey offered to help if they were given control over the forest, and the family sought the help of the old Gods as well. Shinze and Liguaquide worked together to help forge a flaming sword made of the crystal holy waters that would bless the family, but they must continue to worship them faithfully and never betray an ally again. This has been successful most of the time, but if it takes more than 24 hours to perform the ceremony, they risk turning into a vampire. This usually takes about 5 days before they fully turn, but when they do they are faster, stronger, and more deadly than a normal vampire fledgling.

A note from Lady Caltain: This secret has mostly been forgotten by the world and your ancestral Glasserunes worked VERY HARD to keep it that way. This is the only historical record I could find anywhere--and I had to send for it from a secret library in Corazon Island. No one alive remembers the Stonebloods. Even Blitherby is not aware of the origins of the curse and truly doesn’t believe it to be true based on what he has said to some of my informants. That said, I found nothing about missing children listed in any of the books I read. I know you had mentioned the family curse hoping they were connected. I will keep looking. Sorry James. xxLC

I should have known that last minute changes wouldn't work well. We tried for hours. Hannah, Onyx, and Matthias all tried to help. It didn't work and we all ended up on our buts in the dirt.

I am DETERMINED to get Muffin to let Olive ride her. They always get along so well I don't know she is acting up! Maybe it is all the extra people.

Eva Mill's Diary

Day 1 of Orastava: I love the festival! I helped sell florettes today and there were so many new people! There was a super cute girl who said she would meet me in the gardens to see my roses tomorrow!

Day 2 of Orastava: I met Hannah in the garden and she loved my roses, she said she will watch the show on Sunday and hopes I win. We went to the games area and found a group of kids from out of town. Valeria was really good at ring toss, but Onyx was the best at the duck game. We had to ditch James as he was acting really creepy.

Day 6 of Orastava: Sorry I haven’t written in a few days, I have been meeting everyone to wander the festival and coming home so tired! The contest is tomorrow. I am so proud of my roses! I hope I win!

Blitherby's Letter

Image-empty-state.png

Adalia managed to pickpocket Blitherby after a long chase through the town and find a letter in his pocket then swap it for a blank sheet of paper. It was addressed to Lady Elaine Tanglewood and read:

This was not what we agreed upon. Where did you put it? Respond immediately.

They decided to send it to Lady Elaine Tanglewood and added
to ensure privacy, send to Bloody Baron Inn c/o Maria Benneton

The Sword of Glasserune

Image-empty-state.png

James Glasserune mentioned the sword was missing the morning they found him drinking in the pub, mourning the death of his father. He explained that his family would turn to a vampire if they were not blessed in a ritual with the family sword within 24 hours of their death. When he went to get the sword, it was missing. He sent them to his house to investigate, and told them that the sword was supposed to be in the family crypts in Resteria Cemetary. When they went to the Mausoleum, they found a silver chest with a false bottom, when they removed the bottom, there was a deep well of concentrated holy water and a crystal sheath submerged in the water. It was determined that only those of a good alignment would be able to safely touch the water. The group found the sword through the labryinth under Stoneblood manor after finding a hidden passage from the Glasserune Mausoleum. It was behind many traps and hidden in a pit of flesh, blood, and bone overgrown with ivy. They exited through another mausoleum (one they suspected was inhabited by vampires) into the cemetery, so they ran to the Glasserune Mausoleum and returned the sword to the crystal sheath in the holy water. With a large hiss of steam as the flames hit the water, the sword sunk into the sheath, the chest closed and it all disappeared.

After a lot of questioning how to get it back and a possibly failed summoning, the sword appeared during the ritual for Baron Hanburn Glasserune and showered him with holy water before lighting on fire and stabbing him in the heart. It then vanished again.

Blitherby's Burnt Paper

Image-empty-state.png

A paper was found burning in Blitherby's fireplace. No words were visible, but half of a family crest was seen. Carindrina showed this note to James. He told them to pour holy water over it, and the message, "I agree something must be done" appeared.

Vision From The Faerie Seer

Image-empty-state.png

You saw a silver ring slipped onto a finger. There was a trail of mushrooms that seemed to glow. You moved on and the pressure around you built and built as the darkness grew deeper until finally your ears popped. A glowing hand, a glowing bull, and a glowing sun appeared before you. Then a bridge over some lava. You see long chains leading into darkness. There is laughter, children’s laughter, but it sounds hollow and distant. The images were quick, small flashes, then the vision broke.
